Dear Residents of the South Seas Tower (Part 2),

in Family Travel, Kid Time

The judgement that I saw in your eyes was something that I’d never witnessed before. And, I’m no stranger to the looks that my children attract. The stares that I got in the grocery store over a child throwing a tantrum was nothing compared to an entire pool deck of half-awake seniors judging on my parenting style. With few other children around, I was completely outnumbered. After this year, the score is: Seniors (1), Howards (0).

A Letter to the Residents of the South Seas Towers

in Family Travel, Kid Time

I understand that you like it to be quiet around your swimming pool. I understand that you’ve already scolded my mother, of retirement age herself, for using her cell phone at the pool instead of observing the quiet rules. A brief phone conversation by a 70-year-old lady is going to be a refreshing Spring picnic compared to the havoc that my children are going to wreak at the pool. In other words, you’ve seen nothing yet.

14 Milestones Your Pediatrician Won’t Mention

in Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

2. On vacation, you can have a cocktail around the pool without imminent fear of drowning. I’ve had mine in formal swim lessons since 6-months old in order to accomplish this. My kids can now actually swim without assistance. Stay tuned – spring break is bound to be interesting.

Valentine’s Day Madness

in Holiday/Seasonal, Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

You probably won’t be pinning it to any Valentine’s day boards on Pinterest. Unless, of course, you have a board entitled, “Crap I send to school with kids.” If you do, please pin away. Pin away, ladies. Here’s my shoe box lovingly covered in wrinkled pink wrapping paper.

Montessori Preschool Was Not For Me

in Kid Time, Parenting Advice

Many parents are trying to select preschools for their children at this time of year. There are many considerations: proximity to your home; schedule; and quality of program. Most importantly, the school and its philosophy have to fit your family’s and child’s personalities.

How To Teach A Kindergartener to Tie His Shoes

in Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

He’s six-years-old, riding the bus every day to full-day kindergarten, but he doesn’t own a pair of shoes with laces.

At the beginning of the school year, his teacher made an announcement on her webpage that three students are in the shoe-lacing club. OK, three out of twenty-four. We’re not really behind. Last week, I asked him if there were still just three kids in that club. “There’s thirteen

10 Ways to Optimize Your Morning Routine

in Get More Time, Kid Time, Parenting Advice

Your kids are taking forever to eat their breakfast, brush their teeth, and put on their socks. You have five minutes to get them into the car before you’ll be officially late for school, dance class, daycare, or grandma’s house. No matter what time you get up in the morning, getting them dressed, fed, and into the car with all their stuff takes so much time, you’re always late. And longing for the days before kids when you could simply go to the car with only your keys and leave the house without making sure everyone remembered to put on pants. Sound familiar?

Who Wants to Marry my Six-Year Old Son?

in Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

As my kindergartener exited the bus today, the little girl who’s seated next to him yelled through the open door to me, “I’m going to marry him.”

“What?” I squealed to my son who bounded down the bus steps beaming from ear to ear. “I send you to kindergarten and you come back with a wife?”

The Worst Thing About Being A Mom

My new Spanish sister-in-law asked me on our summer vacation at the beach, “What’s the hardest thing about being a mom?”

A million things flashed through my mind. None of them original, however. They were the standard complaints that you always hear about lack of sleep, lack of time, lack of exercise, lack of adult interaction, lack of self, lack of decent clothes, lack of sex.
