Valentine’s Day Madness

in Holiday/Seasonal, Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

You probably won’t be pinning it to any Valentine’s day boards on Pinterest. Unless, of course, you have a board entitled, “Crap I send to school with kids.” If you do, please pin away. Pin away, ladies. Here’s my shoe box lovingly covered in wrinkled pink wrapping paper.

7 Obtainable healthy habits for moms that don’t include healthy food or exercise

in Humor, Me Time

I saw a pregnant woman doing Bikram yoga last night. And when I say pregnant, I mean she was eight-months round dripping sweat from her exposed belly doing a perfect standing bow. Bikram yoga is a 90-minute class in a 110⁰F room. Anyway, she’s motivated me for 2016. If she can exercise, so can I.

10 Things that Happened while DH Traveled for Work

in Humor, Me Time

I read this hilarious article today and since DH travels extensively, I immediately could relate: http://www.scarymommy.com/the-20-thoughts-moms-have-when-their-husbands-are-away-on-business/.

In addition to echoing this author’s thoughts, I swear that something always happens while DH’s in another time zone. Like some terrible Murphy’s Law that only strikes while I’m single mothering it. I’m a nervous wreck about everyone’s safety, have the security system armed at

The Worst Compliment to Give a Mom

in Me Time

Like most women, I love compliments. From anyone. On anything. My hair, clothes, shoes; about my children; on my charming wit. I usually take them in any form, even back-handed ones. (It’s kind of sad that I listed my shoes before my intellect, but I guess that’s what we’ve come to expect in the form of compliments.) But there’s one phrase that younger women need to stop staying to women who are only a few years older than them:

4 Unnecessary Holiday Traditions

in Holiday/Seasonal, Humor, Me Time

It’s Christmas week! I love the holidays. The time in between Thanksgiving and New Years is a special time of year for many. My family has holiday traditions that involve parties, decking the halls, baking (or like me, buying and eating) cookies, and gift giving.

How To Teach A Kindergartener to Tie His Shoes

in Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

He’s six-years-old, riding the bus every day to full-day kindergarten, but he doesn’t own a pair of shoes with laces.

At the beginning of the school year, his teacher made an announcement on her webpage that three students are in the shoe-lacing club. OK, three out of twenty-four. We’re not really behind. Last week, I asked him if there were still just three kids in that club. “There’s thirteen

No, I Don’t Want to Donate $1 to the United Way

in Me Time

Checkout charity requests are out of control. You know the drill – the store’s cashier asks you to donate to some charity while you’re paying for your items.

Some people donate one dollar without batting an eyelash. I respect this decisiveness and admire your good-naturedness. But a recent survey shows that the majority of you hate this question as much as I do.

Jagged Little Pill: 20 Years Later and I’m Still Angry

in Me Time

Alanis Morissette’s seminal album Jagged Little Pill celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Just a few days ago, she released a 20th anniversary edition.

She was only 19 when she wrote it. It was more caustic than the typical teenaged angst that say Taylor Swift’s early albums speak to. She was more than angry: she was downright f-ing mad. At men, at relationships, at female inequalities, at not being taken seriously.

Who Wants to Marry my Six-Year Old Son?

in Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

As my kindergartener exited the bus today, the little girl who’s seated next to him yelled through the open door to me, “I’m going to marry him.”

“What?” I squealed to my son who bounded down the bus steps beaming from ear to ear. “I send you to kindergarten and you come back with a wife?”
