Mothers’ Bill of Rights

Despite being a former litigator, raising my two children has been the most challenging and most fulfilling job I’ve ever done. Most of the day, seven days a week, my kids come first, and rightfully so. I’m their mom and at nearly six and nearly four, they still need a lot of my time. But I sometimes skip my shower in the morning if my husband’s away on yet another business trip. I’ve stopped brushing my hair on days that I’ll be sitting in yet another waiting room while my son clocks more hours of therapy than the cast of this season’s Couples Therapy.

In one of my soon to be published blogs, I casually mentioned that having your hair done at a salon is included in the mothers’ bill of rights. I’ve been thinking of other items to add to my list. So, here are my top ten unequivocal rights that all mothers are entitled to. Our needs have to trump our children’s needs every once in a while. Even though I’m a stay-at-home mom, I think they’re applicable to working moms too.

1. ALL (NON-BREASTFEEDING) MOTHERS (AND FATHERS, ACTUALLY) ARE ENTITLED TO SIX UNINTERRUPTED HOURS OF SLEEP.
