How To Teach A Kindergartener to Tie His Shoes

in Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

He’s six-years-old, riding the bus every day to full-day kindergarten, but he doesn’t own a pair of shoes with laces.

At the beginning of the school year, his teacher made an announcement on her webpage that three students are in the shoe-lacing club. OK, three out of twenty-four. We’re not really behind. Last week, I asked him if there were still just three kids in that club. “There’s thirteen

10 Ways to Optimize Your Morning Routine

in Get More Time, Kid Time, Parenting Advice

Your kids are taking forever to eat their breakfast, brush their teeth, and put on their socks. You have five minutes to get them into the car before you’ll be officially late for school, dance class, daycare, or grandma’s house. No matter what time you get up in the morning, getting them dressed, fed, and into the car with all their stuff takes so much time, you’re always late. And longing for the days before kids when you could simply go to the car with only your keys and leave the house without making sure everyone remembered to put on pants. Sound familiar?

No, I Don’t Want to Donate $1 to the United Way

in Me Time

Checkout charity requests are out of control. You know the drill – the store’s cashier asks you to donate to some charity while you’re paying for your items.

Some people donate one dollar without batting an eyelash. I respect this decisiveness and admire your good-naturedness. But a recent survey shows that the majority of you hate this question as much as I do.

Jagged Little Pill: 20 Years Later and I’m Still Angry

in Me Time

Alanis Morissette’s seminal album Jagged Little Pill celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Just a few days ago, she released a 20th anniversary edition.

She was only 19 when she wrote it. It was more caustic than the typical teenaged angst that say Taylor Swift’s early albums speak to. She was more than angry: she was downright f-ing mad. At men, at relationships, at female inequalities, at not being taken seriously.

Who Wants to Marry my Six-Year Old Son?

in Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

As my kindergartener exited the bus today, the little girl who’s seated next to him yelled through the open door to me, “I’m going to marry him.”

“What?” I squealed to my son who bounded down the bus steps beaming from ear to ear. “I send you to kindergarten and you come back with a wife?”

The Worst Thing About Being A Mom

The Worst Thing About Being A Mom

My new Spanish sister-in-law asked me on our summer vacation at the beach, “What’s the hardest thing about being a mom?”

A million things flashed through my mind. None of them original, however. They were the standard complaints that you always hear about lack of sleep, lack of time, lack of exercise, lack of adult interaction, lack of self, lack of decent clothes, lack of sex.

10 Random Collections that i Never Thought I´d Have in my Home

in Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

As a mother of a six and four-year-old, I realize that my home is going to contain some amount of plastic crap. The endless collections of dolls, LEGO sets, action figures, books, kindles, DVDs, CDs, cars, trains, trucks, board games, Disney figurines, BarbiesPretty Ponies, crayons, and makers are standard issue for any boy and girl. For my husband and me, I stock plenty of bottles of wine (see my post – 6 Things My Kids Know About Alcohol). But, I’ve compiled a list of the random things that my kids love to collect.

Are My Kids Too Big for a Double Stroller?

in Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

We’re celebrating my son’s sixth birthday and my daughter’s fourth this weekend.

After several outings this past summer, I’d come home and think, it’s time to retire the double stroller. My husband disagreed. “It’s so great that they still want to go in it,” he’d said. “You get to extend all your outings since they can rest in there.”

6 Things My Kids Know About Alcohol

in Humor, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

It’s pretty scary how much my children know about alcohol already.

My kids know that when my in-laws from Ireland stay, the icemaker in our bar is fired up for the duration of their visit. My kids love to eat ice. Even though, I taught them otherwise, they still eat it direct from the icemaker. Don’t tell Granny that the ice in her white wine may have been touched by my kids’ grubby little fingers.

Halloween Shopping Has Gone Awry

in Holiday/Seasonal, Kid Time, Me Time, Parenting Advice

Two months ago, we’d just arrived back home from our summer vacation. The kids were happily playing in the backyard while my husband unpacked, so I snuck off to grocery shop.

The grocery store by myself! What bliss to do a shop without having to drop them into the store’s playroom or avoid the entrance with the Red Box videos. On a Saturday evening too. It was a real night out for me.
